Can't update status? Facebook and Instagram are down

We can confirm that Facebook's Workplace and Work Chat apps are also affected by this outage.

According to Facebook's developer dashboard, it's been six hours since the social media website and app went down for millions of people. "We're working to resolve the issue as soon as possible", the Facebook account said on Twitter.

Even attempting to access the Facebook front page pops up an error, and it's not entirely clear how long Facebook and Instagram may be down for.

As for Instagram, which is owned by Facebook, the feed is showing up for some, but not others, but everyone is having trouble posting anything.

Independent status monitor Down Detector has registered over 490 reports from users at one time insisting the WhatsApp rival was not working properly. Both Facebook's desktop site and app appeared to be affected.

According to tracking website Down Detector, the problems hit Facebook users in Europe and the U.S. hardest.

Many people are venting about the problems on Facebook competitor Twitter.

Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp have been down for users around the world for at least five hours.

A member of the Facebook team posted on the developer platform status page stating, "We are now experiencing issues that may cause some API requests to take longer or fail unexpectedly".

Facebook makes more than $90 million a day in ad revenue, so any extended outage of its main advertising conduit adds up. Others say they have been unable to access the platform altogether.
