Virginia Lt. Governor releases statement denying allegations of sexual assault

The woman who made the allegation says Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax forced her to perform oral sex in 2004 in MA.

The third Democrat Sabato is referring to is Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring, who this week also admitted to wearing blackface while at UVA in the 1980s.

Fairfax, 39, has said his encounter with a woman who accused him of forcing himself on her sexually in Boston in 2004 was entirely consensual.

Fairfax insists that he won't resign and that "a vicious and coordinated smear campaign is being orchestrated against me".

Jane Dailey, a history and law professor at the University of Chicago who has written extensively about race and the Jim Crow era, notes that Virginia has always been an odd contradiction when it comes to racial politics. Rather than Congress impeaching Donald Trump, Democrats in Virginia will begin impeachment proceedings on Monday against Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax after multiple allegations of sexual assault emerged over the last week.

On Saturday, Virginia's House of Delegates Speaker Kirk Cox joined the chorus calling for Fairfax's resignation.

It also has stirred Democrats' concerns that political discord in Virginia, a key swing state in presidential elections, could flip it back into the Republican column in the 2020 White House race.

A second woman has accused Virginia's lieutenant governor of sexual misconduct, U.S. media reported Friday, further adding to the political turmoil in the eastern USA state.

They added, "While we believe that anyone accused of such a grievous and harmful act must receive the due process prescribed by the Constitution, we can't see it in the best interest of the Commonwealth of Virginia for the Lieutenant Governor to remain in his role".

Although the Democratic Party has taken nearly a zero-tolerance approach to misconduct among its members in this #MeToo era, a housecleaning in Virginia could be costly: If all three Democrats resigned, Republican House Speaker Kirk Cox would become governor.

"A week ago nearly exactly, Justin Fairfax seemed to be just hours away from taking the oath of office as governor and now the governor is staying in and he may be the one to go", Sabato said.

Norfolk native Joe Dillard said Northam should resign, and that the allegations against Fairfax should be investigated before discussing what consequences he should face. And the reason I used a very little bit is because, I don't know if anybody's ever tried that, but you can not get shoe polish off, ' he said. "I call for his immediate resignation".

Seeking to mend fences with Virginia's African-American population, Northam on Friday met privately with the president and founder of the National Black Farmers Association, John Boyd Jr., in Richmond, the state capital.

RICHMOND, VA - FEBRUARY 07: Virginia Lt. Governor Justin Fairfax presides over the Senate at the Virginia State Capitol, February 7, 2019 in Richmond, Virginia. Additionally, the firm said it possessed statements from former classmates corroborating that Watson had immediately told friends about the alleged rape. That openness dissipated as the week dragged on, as he rushed through the hallways of the Capitol and avoided questions on the graphic allegations against him. "The time has come for him to step down", state lawmakers said in a statement. Fairfax, meanwhile, has retained Kavanaugh's legal team.

Herring learned from both Northam and Fairfax. In a statement, Norment condemned the use of blackface. Durham police spokesman Wil Glenn also said he couldn't find a report in the department's system on the 2000 allegation. He called top Virginia Democrats, at times almost in tears, to apologize for the controversy and looked to move on by staying out of the limelight. It was an argument that played well in rural areas, which make up the vast majority of land in Virginia.
