Speaker Pelosi Admonishes Freshman Omar over Israel Tweet

They said "Anti-Semitism must be called out, confronted and condemned", they declared that they are "and will always be strong supporters of Israel in Congress", they acknowledged that "legitimate criticism of Israel's policies is protected by the values of free speech", and they called on Omar "to immediately apologize for these hurtful comments".

The Minnesota freshman has faced criticism for weeks over her positions on the Jewish state, but it boiled over late Sunday after she reacted to a Republican critic in a tweet. Another tweet mentioned "the Benjamins", a reference to $100 bills.

Later asked on Twitter who she thought was paying members of Congress to support Israel, Omar responded, "AIPAC!"

President Trump has called on Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., to resign after she made comments on social media that were criticized as "anti-Semitic" by lawmakers from both parties, including House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

Trump described the apology as "lame", according to The Associated Press.

"This is why I unequivocally apologise".

"There's a growing group of people in the Democratic Party that are anti-Israel openly, and I think they're afraid of them", said Rubio.

Pelosi may face additional pressure to remove Omar from the Foreign Relations Committee, says KC Johnson, a professor at Brooklyn College and the City University of NY, who formerly taught at Tel-Aviv University.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerrold Nadler named Omar in his statement and said she had failed a test of leadership. None of the Democratic presidential hopefuls weighed in publicly as their party's House leaders chastised Omar.

"Anti-Semitism has no place in the United States Congress", Trump said.

"Thank you for the apology and for hearing the voices of Jewish Americans", tweeted Congressman Josh Gottheimer. They are the first Muslim women to serve in the Congress. Pelosi and other Democrats, including leaders and chairmen, laid down a marker making clear that Omar had overstepped.

The BDS movement according to their own website, "works to end global support for Israel's oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with worldwide law".

Which is why one of the most vile anti-Israel groups, Jewish Voice for Peace, tweeted: "We #standwithIlhan and appreciate her response to the impact of word choices but it isn't really about words here, it's about all of our abilities to critique @aipac".

AIPAC has formidable financial clout, and it prides itself on its influence in U.S. politics. On Friday, McCarthy challenged Democrats to make similar moves against Omar and Tlaib, drawing an equivalence between their actions and those of King.

Omar had initially said she didn't understand why American Jews would be offended by the statement, which critics argued evoked ugly Nazi conspiracies about Jewish people's power to "hypnotize" the world. Omar said she was discussing the Israeli regime within the context of the Gaza War. "We know that numerous attacks against her are created to discredit a new generation of political leaders who are opposed to the Netanyahu government's racist policies", wrote IfNotNow, an American Jewish activist group that opposes the occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

Less than a week earlier, all but one high-profile Democratic senator eyeing the White House in 2020 voted against a Middle East policy measure that included a provision cracking down on BDS activism against Israel.
