Small plane breaks apart over California neighborhood, killing 5

An airplane crash in California killed five and wounded several others Sunday when the plane dove into a home roughly 40 miles from Los Angeles.

He said the deceased occupants of the home were two males and two females. No other identifying information such as names or ages was immediately released.

The small plane, a 1981 twin-engine Cessa 414A, left Fullerton Municipal Airport just after 1:30 p.m. Sunday, according to KABC. he pilot flew about 10 miles from the airport before he encountered an issue. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are investigating, he said.

"It's the eerie, low rumbling sound that keeps getting lower and louder".

Pokey Sanchez, an assistant chief with the Orange County Fire Department, said firefighters planned to sift through the badly burned two-story house in case there are additional victims of the Sunday afternoon crash.

"The main cabin of the airplane, along with one of the engines, came to rest at the bottom of a ravine in the backyard of somebody's house", he said. "I come out ... it's raining plane parts from the sky".

"It wasn't intact", he said of the plane as it was coming toward the neighborhood.

The two injured were taken to a hospital and treated for moderate burns, the Orange Country Register reported. "Then like it was slow motion, I saw a bigger piece falling in front of our home".

A portion of the plane's right wing had not been found, and investigators would search the burned house, Smith said.

Video taken by witnesses show plane debris on fire in the middle of the street and a man with a garden hose attempting to put the flames out.

Clint Langford said he was in his living room when he heard a frightening sound. The fire spread to a SUV that was parked in the driveway.

A spokesman with the National Transportation Safety Board says the twin-engine Cessna 414A crashed shortly after taking off from a nearby airport. It also showed plane debris scattered on the ground.
