Kane to step up recovery from ankle injury next week

Kane, the North London club's top scorer with 14 league goals this season, is expected to be out until March after damaging left ankle ligaments against Manchester United at Wembley on January 13.

Whether that means he will return before March remains to be seen and Pochettino is not putting a timescale on it.

"Of course I wanted to strengthen the squad but if we can not sign, I need to stick with the project of the club", Pochettino told his weekly news conference.

"We were saying when they finished second a couple of years ago that they needed to add to that squad to be able to be serious contenders", Ferdinand told Sky Sports.

"He is showing on social media that he looks very strong and very fit, running and doing some exercises". He is very strong and is a guy that puts in 200 percent to try and be back as soon as possible. "We are in a good way and we need to carry on and try to be as consistent as possible until the end".

"We will see next week how we go, start to get the balls out and just see how the ankle reacts". Training with the Under-23's is as soul destroying for the misfiring striker as the tantalising prospect of him being one injury to a fellow Spurs player away from being recalled to the first team.

"I wanted to strengthen the squad but, if we can not sign anyone, I need to stick with the pressure of the club".

Kane is joined on the sidelines by another high-profile injury victim Dele Alli and they, along with Ben Davies, will miss Saturday's visit of Newcastle. The key players of the game are Rondon, Matt Ritchie.

Pochettino's men also scored late on to beat Fulham and Watford in their last two league outings and are now just four points off leaders Liverpool, who are in action at West Ham United on tomorrow morning (Singapore time).
