Two women have made allegations against Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax.

The calls for Fairfax to resign come as Virginia's Democratic governor and attorney general are embroiled in scandals involving the past use of blackface.

"Virginia needs someone that can heal".

Fairfax says the encounter was consensual.

Northam said Fairfax would have to step aside if sexual assault allegations against him were found to be true. Fairfax has denied wrongdoing.

"Our American values don't just work when it's convenient - they must be applied at the most hard of times", he said.

His comments come as he continues to resist calls to step down over a racist photo on his medical school yearbook page, which showed one man dressed in blackface and another man dressed in a Ku Klux Klan outfit. Instead, he urged authorities to investigate the allegations against him. Fairfax is accused of sexual assault in two cases that date back almost two decades.

Gov. Ralph Northam tells @GayleKing: "I have thought about resigning, but I've also thought about what Virginia needs right now".

Northam said the "first indentured servants from Africa" arrived in what is now Virginia in 1619.

The poll, taken late last week, showed that by a wide margin those surveyed said Herring should remain in office.

On CBS's Sunday morning Face the Nation, Mr Northam said: "I really think that I'm in a position where I can take Virginia to the next level".

"Before Donald Trump, I would say with this kind of stuff, it's impossible for a person to just hang on, put their head down and ignore it", said Quentin Kidd, a political science professor at Christopher Newport University.

Senate Majority Leader Tommy Norment, R, also acknowledged he was an editor of a 1968 yearbook that featured racial slurs and photos of students in blackface, but said he was not responsible for the content. "I say again without reservation: I did not sexually assault or rape Meredith Watson, Vanessa Tyson or anyone else". "If I had it to do over again, I would step back and take a deep breath". The picture was on Northam's yearbook page, next to other photos of him and under the header of his name, but it wasn't clear which, if either, of the men in this particular picture was Northam.

Although the party has taken an nearly zero-tolerance approach to misconduct among its members in this #MeToo era, a housecleaning in Virginia could be costly: If all three Democrats resigned, Republican state House Speaker Kirk Cox would become governor. "Lieutenant-Governor Fairfax has suggested and called for an investigation, I strongly support that". Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), and Sen.

Virginia's Democratic congressional delegation was split.

The accusations of racist behaviour or sexual assault targeting the three men have rattled party leadership in a swing state that likely will play a pivotal role in the 2020 US presidential election. "I am asking that no one rush to judgment and I am asking for there to be space in this moment for due process".

Northam apologized for ever wearing blackface, saying his good black friend taught him why that was wrong.

Embattled Virginia Governor Ralph Northam is blaming his white privilege on recent accusations of racism.

Virginia Democratic Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax would replace him if the governor left office.
