Jason Day in the mix at PGA Pebble Beach
Day shares third at six under alongside five others including five-time major victor Phil Mickelson. "I don't think I've ever done that before, certainly not in competition, so that was a bit milestone for me", said Mickelson, who could be excused for his fading memory.
Although the Queenslander's drought is nearly out to three years, Scott feels he is on the cusp of reclaiming his top form as he prepares for this week's Pebble Beach Pro Am in California.
A poor three-putt bogey from 21 feet at the 18th took some of the gloss off his day but he was still just three shots behind early leader Brian Gay, who shot a seven-under 64 at Monterey Peninsula where four-time victor Phil Mickelson carded a 65 and Dustin Johnson and Jordan Spieth opened with 66s.
"I think history was made as far as my career. I ran a number of putts by, but I made a lot of them coming back and made a lot of short ones".
Also contesting the event played across US Open rotational venue Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill and Monterey Peninsula Country Club are Australians Aaron Baddeley, Rod Pampling John Senden, Matt Jones, Curtis Luck, Ryan Ruffels and Cameron Davis.
"I have the honour to play all three courses here and, just because of such lovely scenery, I couldn't even focus on where my ball was going", Choi said of Pebble Beach Golf Links, which is set on the famed Monterey Peninsula.
"I felt that I was practising better than I was playing, which is frustrating", the Greystones star said of his struggle to score well during the Middle East swing. "This was a day we had great weather, courses were very "scoreable", so you needed to take advantage of that".
His round included a birdie on the par-three ninth, his 18th hole of the day, to leave him alongside Gay on seven under.
Cody Gribble had a 6-under 66 at Spyglass Hill and Si Woo Kim had a 6-under 66 at Pebble Beach.
Everyone in the field plays each of the three courses before the cut is made for the final round at Pebble. Both played at Monterey on Thursday.
"I was really surprised he could say that", said Choi, who needed a translator to share that.
