Trump once again highlighted border security during his State of the Union address last Tuesday, calling El Paso "one of our Nation's most unsafe cities" and erroneously crediting "a powerful barrier" for making it one of the safest. According to Margo, along with Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics, El Paso has been one of the safest large cities in America for years.

Looming over the president's address was a fast-approaching February 15 deadline to fund the government and avoid another shutdown. He might just be taking his fight for a border wall to the people.

About 1,300 of the migrants in the caravan are from Honduras, 200 are from Guatemala and 400-500 are from El Salvador, Guatemalan Consul Tekandi Paniagua in Del Rio, Texas said on Monday, ahead of their expected arrival in the Mexican border town of Piedras Negras.

President Donald Trump used a portion of Tuesday's State of the Union speech to tout the safety of El Paso, crediting the west Texas border city's transformation to the building of a border wall there.

He condemned the wall again in a series of tweets after Trump's State of the Union address, saying that walls have traditionally not worked and have "resulted in the deaths of thousands of migrants, including children".

Despite losing his Senate race against GOP Senator Ted Cruz, O'Rourke's ability to turn a deep red state into a battleground for Democrats and lose by just three points hoisted him to national prominence, prompting talk of a 2020 presidential run.

"We're going to have them up before the appropriations conference committee, and we are going to find out what they want", said Shelby to CNN news. O'Rourke and local leaders say Trump's facts are wrong and walls are irrelevant.

In San Diego, high school teacher Stacy Salazar, whose students are primarily Hispanic and low-income, was appalled that Trump wanted to spend billions on walls when her school could not afford basic supplies.

O'Rourke plans to lead a group of protesters to march through his hometown of El Paso, Texas, as Trump's Monday evening campaign style rally gets underway. "But we've progressed to be the number one safest city in the nation".

In his speech, Trump suggested "compromise" and said he would be prepared to only build a wall in areas where the U.S. Border Patrol saw it necessary - a far cry from his 2016 campaign pledge for one from coast to coast.

Until recently, most people caught crossing the border illegally were men from Mexico, but now Central American families and unaccompanied minors make up some 60 percent of those apprehended, data from the agency show.
