Yankees: How will the signing of Troy Tulowitzki affect Manny Machado?

The New York Yankees have agreed to terms with free agent infielder Troy Tulowitzki, reports ESPN's Jeff Passan. Rather, they simply couldn't pass up Tulowitzki on such an cheap salary.

Tulowitzki became a free agent when the Toronto Blue Jays released him during the winter meetings, choosing to eat the $38 million in salary owed to him over the next two seasons.

The Yankees were in need of a shortstop as Didi Gregorius recovers from October elbow surgery, which is expected to keep him out until at least midseason.

Tulowitzki missed all of the 2018 season because of heel problems, but he's looking for a healthy rebound in 2019.

Less than a month after being released by the Toronto Blue Jays, shortstop Troy Tulowitzki has landed on his feet. I'm not concerned about the layoff.

Tulowitzki made his debut as a 21 year old for the Colorado Rockies and quickly established himself as one of the best all-round players.

So how will this affect Machado's decision?

Everyone has their own opinion on Manny Machado.

If Tulowitzki proves capable of filling in for Gregorius - and as many as a dozen clubs, the Yankees included, witnessed a December workout organized to showcase his apparent health - the Yankees could still sign Machado to play third base, then either trade Miguel Andujar or shift him to first base.

John Gibbons did not get to manage Troy Tulowitzki a year ago and yet the now-former Blue Jay skipper declared the Yankees took a great gamble for next season. But you'd have to figure that part of the recruiting process would involve allowing Machado to play his desired position. The San Diego Padres have been long rumored to have interest in the 2017 American League Rookie of the Year runner-up. So that could be a hint that a Yankee signing is imminent, right?
