President George H.W. Bush Has Passed Away

Former US President George HW Bush has died at the age of 94, his son George W Bush has announced.

George Herbert Walker Bush took the oath of office as the United States' 41st president on January 20, 1989, and was the oldest living former commander in chief.

Prior to serving as President, Mr Bush served as Vice President for Republican heavyweight Ronald Reagan.

Bush was president of the US from 1989-1993 and brought a "dedication to traditional American values" and a determination to make the USA a "kinder and gentler nation", according to a White House biography.

As the last USA president to have served in World War II and the country's last Cold War leader, the end of Mr Bush's time in the White House marked the end of a political era.

"George HW Bush was a man of the highest character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for", he added.

Only one other US president, John Adams, had a son who also became president. He was succeeded by Democrat Bill Clinton.

His wife Barbara died earlier this year on April 17. Bush is celebrating his 94th birthday in Maine. He met Barbara Pierce during a party Phillips Academy party in 1941. The couple was married for 73 years.

Lean and athletic at 188cm tall, Bush became a war hero while still a teenager. A submarine rescued him. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for bravery.
