Mattis: Putin tried to ‘muck around’ in US midterm elections

He stressed that Russian Federation tried to interfere in mid-term elections in the United States last month - the same as it did in 2016, but the American authorities will take all necessary to continue to reliably protect our democracy.

"He is not recognising that what he is doing is actually creating the animosity against his people".

President Donald Trump said November 27 that he was weighing a decision to cancel a scheduled meeting with President Vladimir Putin at the G-20 Summit in Argentina, given the escalation of hostilities. "We are seeing a continued effort around those lines".

Mattis said, in the Indo-Pacific region, we keep our decades-old alliances strong by building new partnerships.

Mattis said the relationship between the United States and Russian Federation has "no doubt" worsened amid Russia's continued efforts to intervene in the U.S. electoral process.

Notably calling President Vladimir Putin out by name, Mattis said that Putin's actions have become a catalyst for North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries to "rearm and to strengthen" on a unified and democratic level.

That comment reiterated those he made several days prior that Russia's attack upon and seizure of three Ukrainian ships violated global law.

American politicians, including Donald Trump, voiced concerns prior to November that Russian Federation would try to meddle in the United States congressional elections.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders on Saturday confirmed Trump's encounter with Putin in Argentina in a statement, saying, "As is typical at multilateral events, President Trump and the first lady had a number of informal conversations with world leaders at the dinner last night, including President Putin". Trump abruptly canceled a planned meeting with Putin at the summit just two days before they were scheduled to sit down.

Speaking in Buenos Aires, Putin told reporters Saturday there were no preconditions for future bilateral talks with Trump.

"Mr. Putin clearly comes tight".

"Ludicrous; Washington parlor game", Pompeo said in a CNN interview at the G-20 meeting when asked whether Trump was motivated to cancel the meeting by Cohen's guilty plea.
