Doctors could not believe the clot stayed intact.

The mysterious, cherry-red cast resembled a piece of coral, and an image of it has gone viral after appearing in The New England Journal of Medicine. After previously coughing up other, smaller blood clots, the man let out a big one, and up came this folded-over clot in the exact shape of his right bronchial tree, one of the primary parts of the lung.

The unnamed patient was being treated at the intensive care unit at the University of California San Francisco Medical Centre, which was where reports say he started coughing violently.

Per the Atlantic, Wieselthaler said that the use of the pump requires anticoagulants to "make the blood thinner and prevent clots from forming", though that comes with the risk of uncontrolled internal bleeding.

On Monday, The Journal tweeted a picture of a completely intact blood clot, shaped just like the right bronchial tree in the lung.

"An Impella ventricular assist device was placed for management of acute heart failure, and a continuous heparin infusion was initiated for systemic anticoagulation".

"We were astonished", pulmonary surgeon Georg Wieselthaler told The Atlantic of the clot.

When Wieselthaler and his team delicately spread out the clot, they discovered "that the architecture of the airways had been retained so perfectly that they were able to identify it as the right bronchial tree based exclusively on the number of branches and their alignment".

During the week of his hospitalization the man's cough reportedly progressed to coughing up blood and phlegm.

"It's a curiosity you can't imagine".

However, doctors said the patient died a week later from heart failure complications. After he was extubated two days later, he had no further signs of coughing up blood.

And in the midst of one coughing fit he hawked up a bronchial tree - a series of tubes that distribute air to the lungs.
