Bush, with former prime minister Brian Mulroney calling it "an enormous loss". He also navigated the United States through the end of the Cold War, with the fall of the Berlin Wall, the Soviet Union, and the reunification of Germany.

Gorbachev, 87, expressed his "deep condolences" to the family of the 41st USA president and the entire American nation.

Former President Bill Clinton is remembering George H.W. Bush for his "great long life of service, love and friendship". His son, George W. Bush also became the 43rd president eight years later, becoming the only other US president, who had a son who also became president, after John Adams.

Meanwhile, Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe wrote that Bush was "a humble, well-respected political figure while serving and through his many years post-presidency".

"On behalf of the people of Azerbaijan and on my own behalf, I extend my deepest condolences to you, the family of the late George Herbert Walker Bush, and the whole people of the United States".

"He was truly a gentleman of American politics and one of the world's most principled defenders of freedom and democracy", Scheer said in a statement.

President Donald Trump, whom Bush pointedly did not support in the bitter 2016 campaign, and First Lady Melania Trump praised the former president in an official White House statement.

"The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41's life and love, for the compassion of those who cared and prayed for Dad, and for the condolences of our friends and fellow citizens".

"The legacy of George H.W. Bush will be forever etched in the history of America and the world", Baker's statement said, according to the New York Times.
