However, Hangouts as part of me Google will continue in the form Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet as both platforms are not going anywhere.

Hangouts was launched as a replacement for Gchat in 2013 by the tech titan but has been losing features in recent years as the company has stopped updating the app and taken away SMS messaging.

That included Google Talk, which was more focused on enterprise users, and Google+ Messenger, the service formerly known as Huddle.

Given Google's abandonment of the app in terms of development and its presumed eventual death, many have already transitioned away from using it. As 9to5Google noted, there hasn't been any movement on development for the app in some time, and Google removed Hangouts' support for SMS in May of past year.

Yesterday it was reported that Google was planning to sunset Hangouts sometime in 2020.

However the claims have not gone down well with the Hangouts team.

Having split the chat tool into corporate-focused Hangouts Chat and Hangouts Meet, sources familiar with Google's plans say that the company is due to shut down the consumer version of Hangouts in 2020. "So while that will result in the eventual shut down of Hangouts classic (as we now call it)", he outlines, "it doesn't imply we are ending support for the use case supported by the product: messaging and meetings".

Google has a history of shelving services that arent as popular as they once were.

Google has indicated for years now that it planned to position Hangouts as a competitor to workplace chat apps like Slack.
