Cardinals stun fading Packers at Lambeau; McCarthy fired

The Green Bay Packers shocked the football world Sunday night when they announced the firing of longtime coach Mike McCarthy.

The Bengals were trending in this direction even before Andy Dalton went on season-ending IR with a thumb injury, as the team went from 4-1 atop the AFC North to 5-7 with a road trip to the Chargers next week.

McCarthy, who helped lead the Packers to the Super Bowl in the 2010 season, has amassed a 125-76-2 as head coach in Green Bay. "As a result, I made the hard decision to relieve Mike McCarthy of his role as head coach, effective immediately", Packers president Mark Murphy said in a statement. It was an abrupt end for McCarthy - who did win a championship, after all - and rare upheaval for a model franchise that last changed coaches during a season 75 years ago.

FanSided is now reporting that the Browns are "working" on hiring the former Packers' head coach.

For quite some time, there have been those who blamed coach Mike McCarthy for the lack of titles more than credited him for steering the team to that title.

Chmura accused Rodgers and his team of quitting on their coach and ultimately getting him fired.

"I mean, I've never been in this spot", McCarthy said in his postgame press conference.

After that defeat, criticism of McCarthy's play-calling seemed to grow louder each season.

Philbin will now get a second chance at the top job after the Packers relieved McCarthy of his duties with immediate effect. In fact, Robinson reported that McDaniels has "been advised to stay away from teams" with the power structure that the Packers now employ.

When McCarthy became Green Bay's head coach in 2006, there were hardly any starting slot cornerbacks and slot receivers.

But it was more than a recent series of tough losses or a fractured relationship between McCarthy and Rodgers that suddenly forced the organization to make what many deemed to be a harsh midseason decision. Sports' Charles Robinson, McDaniels has real interest in going from Tom Brady to Aaron Rodgers next year. Obviously Sean McVay is the coach everyone is trying to emulate right now, and the Packers want to succeed ASAP.

The Packers had made the playoffs in eight consecutive years before missing out last year when finishing 7-9 on the season.

The report was initially made by Barstool Sports' "Pardon My Take" podcast, followed by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport and ESPN's Adam Schefter shortly after.
