News, Oprah was not with her mother at the time of her death, spending Thanksgiving with girls from the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, the South African boarding school she founded in 2002.

According to TMZ, Oprah's niece Alisha Hayes posted that Lee passed away on the holiday, with the family, soon after, confirming her death.

Vernita couldn't raise Oprah because she moved to Milwaukee where she worked as a housemaid.

Oprah and her mother had a strained relationship that the talk show megastar openly discussed her hard past with Lee.

Oprah's relationship with her mother, as fans of her legendary talk show may know, has been strained throughout the years.

Oprah had Lee on her talk show in 1990 where Oprah's personal stylist gave her a makeover. A family spokesperson said the funeral had already taken place and was strictly private.

A rep for Winfrey told us she has no further comment at this time. Memorial donations in Vernita's name may be made to Feeding America'.

After meeting Vernon Winfrey, Vernita welcomed her first child in rural MS at the age of 18.

Oprah moved to Nashville to live with her father permanently in 1968 while she was secretly pregnant at 14.

Vernita Lee, the mother of Oprah Winfrey, has died aged 83.

Her brother Jeffrey died of AIDS in 1989, and Patricia, who died in 2003.

In a 2007 television interview with Milwaukee station WTMJ, Lee said, "I knew Oprah was going to be something". Another one of her children died in 2003.
