Secretary of State Mike Pompeo says the Trump administration will consider a "wide range" of responses if it is determined that Saudi leaders or officials played a role in the alleged murder of USA - based journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

Trump, who has insisted that more facts must be known before making assumptions about Khashoggi, did not say on what he based his statement on the writer's demise two weeks ago.

The president said the consequences for Saudi Arabia, if they are ultimately deemed culpable, "will have to be very severe".

US intelligence officials have mounting circumstantial evidence of Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman's involvement in the death of journalist Jamal Khashoggi, The New York Times reports.

Khashoggi, who had been living in the US, went missing more than two weeks ago after he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

United States and Saudi Arabia were also privy to the recording, which reportedly indicated Khashoggi was drugged, beaten, and dismembered, according to officials cited in Turkish media reports.

Saudi Arabia has not responded to repeated requests for comment from The Associated Press over recent days over Khashoggi's disappearance.

Mr Khashoggi arrived at the consulate several hours later at 1.14pm, then disappeared while his fiancee waited outside for him.

Turkey´s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Saudi King Salman agreed to continue cooperation in the investigation into what happened to Riyadh critic Jamal Khashoggi in telephone talks, the Turkish presidency said Saturday.

"It is out of the question for Turkey to give Pompeo or any other USA official any audio recording", Cavusoglu told reporters during a visit to Tirana, Albania.

The Mail & Guardian also reported on Friday that a decision by former president Jacob Zuma to meet the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, has strained diplomatic relations between the two countries. Khashoggi first began writing for the Post's opinion section in September 2017, and his columns criticized the prince and the direction of the Saudi kingdom.

Turkish media have provided a steady stream of information suggesting Khashoggi was tortured and decapitated by a Saudi hit squad inside the consulate, although Turkey has yet to divulge details about the investigation.

Until Wednesday, South Africa had been silent on the probable murder of Khashoggi at the Saudi consulate in Instanbul, Turkey, on October 2.

Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California said Saudi Arabia's claim that Khashoggi died in a brawl wasn't credible. Saudi King Salman also had a plan to restructure the kingdom's intelligence services.

I have always been troubled by the nature of the relationship between the US and Saudi Arabia. No report has identified the individuals detained or linked the detentions to other reports surfacing this week that the Turkish government was investigating 15 Saudi nationals who traveled to the consulate on short notice. He said, "They're an important strategic ally of the United States, and we need to be mindful of that".
