Malicious messages reportedly crashing PlayStation 4 consoles

Reddit reports suggest PS4 owners are receiving a message that contains indecipherable characters that are causing their console to stop functioning, and requiring a factory reset to regain functionality.

At the time of writing, PlayStation has not acknowledged the bug or issued a solution, so to ensure your console is safe and avoid a factory reset, we recommend changing your settings. Malicious gamers are sending out the post en masse via group chats, so be sure to set your settings to private as soon as possible. The app is free on both iOS and Android, and it's an easy way to both delete messages and block users.

Reports have been circulating this weekend of a message that freezes and effectively bricks the PlayStation 4 from any kind of interaction. The problem comes in the form of a special character that, when sent to you in a private message, immediately causes the console to crash and you to have a big problem on your hands. It happened to me during Rainbow Six: Siege.

"There is a new glitch that basically bricks your console and forces you to factory reset it".

Reddit users seemed to all have stories beginning similarly with "I was beating these guys in x online game" before they received the message.

Sony did not provide comment to Engadget on the matter.

For now, you can set your PlayStation 4 and its mobile apps to only accept messages from friends you've already confirmed, or block messages completely: the options are under Account Management then Privacy Settings in the console settings.

In a statement to VG247, Sony revealed that it is "aware of the situation" and the company is in the midst of planning a system update to fix it.
