Those who've waited faithfully for the more affordable $35,000 version of the Tesla Model 3 to be built could finally get what they've been wanting soon-especially if they live in California, don't mind a little more battery than what they'd planned for, and are okay with a creative view on the bottom-line numbers.

Five-star crash rated, the Tesla Model 3 comes equipped with Tesla Autopilot standard.

The base price will be $US45,000; it will cost about $US35,000 in California after federal and state tax rebates.

Musk also pointed out that the new mid-range Model 3 costs roughly U.S. $35,000 after federal and state tax rebates in California.

The release of a lower-priced Model 3 was a "logical next step", Evercore ISI analyst Arndt Ellinghorst said in a note. The top speed is reduced 30 mph from the performance model to 125 mph maximum, and you'd be able to reach 60 mph in 5.6 seconds instead of just 3.3.

With the arrival of the Model 3 Mid Range model, Tesla will no longer sell the rear-wheel drive Long Range version.

The electric-car maker has started taking orders for a mid-range battery Model 3 that goes about 260 miles between charges for $45,000.

The mid-range Model 3s will be rear-wheel drive only, prompting some to wonder if the company was using software to limit battery capacity on existing RWD inventory in order to get it out of the door.

Tesla has not said if customers who have already purchased cars with the option will be offered any type of compensation. On Jan 1. 2019 the tax credit for these electric cars will be cut in half. CEO Elon Musk recently noted that focusing on the cheaper auto first would cause Tesla to "die," because it's not profitable to make. Within days, the company had more than a quarter million reservations.

Chief Executive Elon Musk late Thursday tweeted out a link to an order page for a "mid range" Model 3 at a cost of $45,000 - still a whopping $10,000 more than what Musk had signaled when he first disclosed plans for the Model 3 in 2016. The reason? It was "causing too much confusion", Musk tweeted. The all-wheel drive powertrain returned to its previous value of $5,000 which brings the long-range Model 3 to $54,000.
