Haley's personal finances are detailed in her public financial disclosure as the US ambassador to the United Nations. Within hours, however, speculation turned to who might succeed her at the UN.

Nikki Haley is resigning from her post as United States ambassador to the United Nations effective at the end of 2018, with President Donald Trump indicating he had advance warning she would leave.

As ambassador, Haley was an outspoken and often forceful envoy - someone whom foreign diplomats looked to for guidance from an administration known for haphazard and inconsistent policy positions.

Ivanka is rumored to be a moderating influence on her father, and is said to have angered right-wingers by encouraging him to water down some of his more socially conservative proposals. She returned to Goldman Sachs, where she worked for more than a decade, earlier this year.

Speaking to reporters Tuesday, Trump himself said he would consider Powell for the role.

CNN has referred to her as "the breakout star" of Trump's cabinet.

The resignation comes just a day after a watchdog group said Haley may have committed an ethics violation by accepting tens of thousands of dollars in flights from SC businessmen who contributed to her gubernatorial campaign.

In April, Haley clashed with White House economic adviser Larry Kudlow over his suggestion she had suffered from "momentary confusion" when she announced that new sanctions against Russian Federation were imminent.

And following Trump's controversial response blaming "both sides" for the violence at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., in August 2017, Haley said she had a "personal conversation" with the president. As a businessman, I expect you will appreciate my sense that returning from government to the private sector is not a step down but a step up.

Trump praised her as having done an incredible job and said he hoped she could come back to the administration in another capacity. "I am saddened that she is leaving the administration, but so grateful for her service".

Then again, Powell might be seen as too "liberal" by the current national security adviser John Bolton, who might be more inclined to suggest someone like Richard Grenell, the current United States ambassador to Germany.

"Now, the United States is respected".

'Then she'll be president, life will finally catch up to House of Cards, and then we can cancel Netflix. She also reportedly was involved with overseeing a $200 billion arms deal between the US and Saudi Arabia.

Haley's decision surprised several senior White House aides, Chief of Staff John Kelly and Vice President Mike Pence.

"Women who accuse anyone should be heard", Haley said last December after accusations against three members of Congress.

Haley praised the couple during her resignation announcement Tuesday.

Nikki Haley on Tuesday abruptly resigned as USA ambassador to the United Nations, a move she said she had talked about with President Donald Trump for months.
