Three-time Shanghai Open victor Novak Djokovic stormed past German Alexander Zverev 6-2, 6-1 to reach the final on Saturday and claim the world number two ranking from Roger Federer.

The 37-year-old will next face Croatian power-hitter Borna Coric, who dumped Australia's Matthew Ebden out of the tournament 7-5 6-4.

Roger Federer was stretched to three sets for a second consecutive match to reach the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals on Thursday.

Edmund was bidding to reach his first Masters semi-final but a couple of forehand errors gifted Zverev a break in the opening game.

The 21-year-old looked to be becoming increasingly frustrated by Djokovic's ability to consistently return even the most measured shots, although he stood his ground in a marathon third game.

Zverev became the first German to seal a spot in successive years in the season-ending event since six-times Grand Slam victor Boris Becker (1994-96).

Zverev needed only one opportunity to break his opponent in either set as he became the fifth player to book his place at the season-ending ATP Finals in London. It extended Djokovic's match winning streak to 17 straight, and he is 26-1 in matches played since the start of Wimbledon. Coric beat Federer in the Halle final in their last meeting earlier this year.

"I just feel like the date of the Davis Cup is really bad, especially for the top players", said Djokovic, echoing the strong sentiments of Zverev a day earlier.

"I wish I could tell you all these answers, but I really don't know". Djokovic saved set point in the opener before taking control of the tie break and the second set to dump out the South African seventh seed.

Speaking in Shanghai, the 31-year-old Djokovic said there was "confusion" with the two competing events coming so close together and being so similar.

A win in Shanghai will add the 72nd trophy to Djokovic's total tally of career titles.
