The cancer-stricken wife of Pakistan's former prime minister Nawaz Sharif died in London on Tuesday while her husband and daughter were in jail, officials said.

Kulsoom Nawaz, 68, died after months in a coma.

Earlier this year, the senior politician had accused the PML-N leadership of politicising Kulsoom Nawaz's illness, saying the hospital where she received treatment was owned by the Sharif family.

"She played an exemplary role as a mother, sister, daughter and wife", he said and added that Kulsoom fought bravely in the most hard times.

Pakistan Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, left, accompanied by his wife Kulsoom Nawaz, arrives at the Tribhuwan Airport to attend the 18th summit of South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) in Kathmandu, Nepal, Tuesday, November 25, 2014.

Three-time-premier Nawaz Sharif, who was removed from office in each of his elected terms, has maintained that his most recent ouster in July 2017 and subsequent conviction were part of a plot against him by the powerful military and the judiciary. Since then, Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz have been making trips back and forth to visit ailing Kulsoom Nawaz. PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif will be proceeding to London to bring Kulsoom's body to Pakistan.

The political career of the former first lady remains far from any controversy, unlike embroilment of her family members in different cases.

PML-N leaders said her funeral will be held in Pakistan. He also directed the Pakistan High Commission in London to assist in the provision of all necessary facilities to the heirs of the deceased.

In her absence, Maryam ran her campaign.

She would not take to politics again until a year ago, after her husband - now prime minister again - was disqualified by the Supreme Court from holding a public office.

"Sad to learn of Begum Kulsoom Nawaz's death".

Begum Kulsoom Nawaz was born in 1950.

Arif Alvi condoled the bereaved family. "May Allah bless the departed soul eternal peace at Heaven-Amen", COAS", he tweeted.
