The Trump administration says China is stepping up covert and overt activities to stifle free speech, punish those who support the president's tough trade stance against China and interfere in the US political system.

Trump has slapped tariffs on $US250 billion ($343 billion) in Chinese goods as part of an escalating trade war between the two countries, and several of his advisers said he was likely referring both to Chinese counter-tariffs that have targeted politically sensitive industries - especially in Midwest states Trump won - as well as the Chinese public relations campaign. "If they want two states, that's okay with me".

Trump indicated that moving the embassy was "a big chip" the USA delivered to the Israelis.

"I like two-state solution", Mr Trump said in his most clear endorsement of the plan as he met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. That's my feeling. Now, you may have a different feeling. "I think a lot of progress has been made".

"I like a two-state solution".

China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi called Mr Trump's claim that China was attempting inference complete "nonsense".

But "if the Israelis and the Palestinians want one state, that's okay with me", he added.

I think, and I say this objectively, that the American-Israeli alliance has never been stronger. "I'm happy if they're happy".

US President Donald Trump admitted his friendship with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping could be over on Wednesday as he accused Beijing of undermining his prospects in upcoming elections.

He said that China was meddling in elections because, in his words, he was being tough on China economically. Israel considers all of Jerusalem - home to sites holy to Muslims, Jews and Christians - to be its capital, a claim not widely accepted internationally.

Observers have suggested that these measures are tactics by the United States to force Palestinians to accept a Trump-touted peace deal, which will be hugely favourable to Israel.

His administration has also slashed aid to the Palestinians by hundreds of millions of dollars and ended USA support for the United Nations agency that helps Palestinian refugees.

Mr Trump also waded into thorny Middle East politics, endorsing the two-state solution to bring an end to the decades-long conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is scheduled to address the United Nations on Thursday, where his spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeina said he'll deliver "a clear speech to the president that outlines the real features of a final peace".

Bill Clinton oversaw the Oslo peace accords a quarter of a century ago which spelled out the aim of a two-state solution and allowed for the creation of the Palestinian Authority which is meant to rule over the West Bank and Gaza Strip. "This is the Arab and worldwide attitude, and all final status issues need to be solved according to the global resolutions and the Arab Peace Initiative".

"It is important to set what is inadmissible to us: Israel will not relinquish security control west of Jordan". "And I started to realize that peace between Israel and the Palestinians for the Middle East is a very important thing, and we're trying very hard to get it".

"The U.S. will not tell you how to live and work or worship", Trump said as he unapologetically promoted his "America First" agenda. Now that's off the table.

A senior administration official briefed reporters Wednesday after Trump said there was "plenty of evidence" that China is interfering in US midterm elections. Again, they did that before Trump became president. He also vowed to continue to impose sanctions on Iran.
