News reports Cosby was sentenced Tuesday after being convicted in April of the assault on Constand, who had told the court she was drugged and sexually assaulted by Cosby in 2004.

"I wanted 30 years but I'm very happy to know that Mr Cosby will do time in prison", said Chelan Lasha, one of his accusers who testified at trial.

The punishment made him the first celebrity of the #MeToo era to be sent to prison and all but completed the dizzying, late-in-life fall from grace for the comedian, TV star and breaker of racial barriers.

Prosecutors asked for a five to 10-year prison term, while the for the 81-year-old entertainer's defence asked for house arrest, given his age and health. Dozens of women accused him of drugging and sexually assaulting them over the course of his decades-long career, spanning the 1960s to the 2000s.

O'Neill also declared Cosby to be a "sexually violent predator", which will require him to register with Philadelphia state police, and submit to counselling and notification as a sex offender for life.

The 81-year-old comedian did not make a statement in court.

Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas Judge Steven O'Neill ordered Cosby to be jailed immediately, denying Cosby's request for bail while lawyers appeal the conviction.

Green, Cosby's attorney, asked for a sentence of house arrest and said that Cosby was not a danger to anyone.

"He's hidden behind a character he created, Dr. Cliff Huxtable", Montgomery County District Attorney Kevin Steele said at a news conference, referring to Cosby's best-known role.

"Bill Cosby took my attractive, healthy young spirit and crushed it", she wrote.

"Bill Cosby got 3-10 years.so a life sentence", one person wrote on Twitter.

In Ms Constand's impact statement, provided to reporters by the prosecution team on Tuesday, she said: "To truly understand the impact that the sexual assault has had on my life, you have to understand the person that I was before it happened". Prosecutors asked for five to 10 years behind bars, saying the comic could still be a threat to women. "It took 60+ accusers to finally bring his survivors justice &vindication".

Cosby's sentence came just hours after O'Neill ruled that the convicted comedian is a "sexually violent predator", a designation that includes registration as a sex offender and lifelong notification and counseling requirements.

On Monday, a psychologist for the state testified that Cosby appears to have a mental disorder that gives him an uncontrollable urge to assault women.

He will be one of 86 inmates over age 80 held by Pennsylvania's Department of Corrections, where the two oldest inmates are both 91, Worden said.

Ms Constand wrote that she stopped eating, sleeping and socialising in the wake of the assault.

The Cosby case "really raised awareness of the pervasiveness of ... sexual misconduct against subordinates and against women of relatively less power", said Daniel Filler, dean of Drexel University's law school.

Cosby's first trial in 2017 ended with a hung jury.
