Rafael Nadal outlasts Dominic Thiem in marathon match at US Open

South African Kevin Anderson's grand slam run came to an end as he lost 7-5 6-2 7-6 to Austria's Dominic Thiem in the round of 16 at the US Open, in NY, on Sunday.

Nadal, the No. 1 seed and defending U.S. Open champion was completely gassed in a dominant 6-0 first-set sweep for Thiem.

The towering South African saved seven out of nine break points he faced and forced Shapovalov into 77 errors, much to the dismay of the vocally pro-Canadian crowd.

"Two matches in the row that were very tough ones", said Nadal, who had to battle back against Russian Karen Khachanov two days ago. I know how he plays. "It was a great battle". This was the longest match Rafael Nadal has ever played in NY and he was forced to give his best after a slow start and overpower a great rival who finally produced super quality tennis outside clay and proved his position in the Top 10.

Rafael Nadal turned in another unconvincing display but defeated Nikoloz Basilashvili at the US Open to set up a quarterfinal meeting with Dominic Thiem.

"Dominic is a fantastic player".

"He's a fantastic player", said Nadal. "Happy for him that he's in quarter-finals here", he said.

"I just wish him all the very very best".

The two traded points through the tiebreak with neither extending his lead beyond one until Nadal finally created the two-point margin necessary to win at 7-5 off of Thiem's serve. On clay, it's one of the biggest challenges in sports to beat this guy or to compete with this guy. Two other intriguing men's matches will be on Louis Armstrong Stadium: No. 5 Kevin Anderson, last year's runner-up, against No. 9 Dominic Thiem; and No. 11 John Isner against No. 25 Milos Raonic, a 2016 Wimbledon finalist.

Isner endured a five-set bout in the second round of the tournament and a three hour and 26-minute blockbuster in the third, but the eleventh seed showed few signs of fatigue. Tim first came in the quarter-finals of the US Open and has consolidated its position in the struggle for a place in the Final tournament.

Elsewhere, Juan Martin del Potro beat Borna Coric 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 to make the last eight for a third successive year.

It was his 58th unforced error on a night when he sent down 18 aces and fired 74 winners. In a duel with the young Croat Coric from Boric del Potro had problems only in the first set, during which the only time in the game lost his serve. This set lasted 67 minutes but the real drama was just around the corner in set number four, with 12 break points in total and more than 80 minutes required to be completed! And also the court‚ I think‚ made a big difference. "It gave me confidence".

"Two matches in a row, very tough ones", the Spaniard told reporters afterwards, understating his almost eight hours of work. "They have to go back to Argentina and work again after this tournament". But I did today, so I just keep up my habits.

Del Potro reached the semi-finals for the third time, defeating John Isner 6-7 (5/7), 6-3, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 and ending American hopes of a first men's champion at the event since 2003. He served big when he needed to, played unbelievably big.
