Back in action after a surprising run to fourth place at the World Cup, England were sent to their first competitive home loss in 11 years yesterday.

Even during their morale-boosting run in Russian Federation, manager Southgate warned there was still work to do and the performance at Wembley underlined that message.

It was a disappointing night for World Cup semi-finalists England, who took an early lead through Marcus Rashford but were behind within 22 minutes after goals from Saul Niguez and Rodrigo Moreno.

However, the former Southampton defender remains a doubt for England's friendly against Switzerland on Tuesday. I want to be in games that matter, I believe I've been through an experience that is as pressured as you're ever going to face at any club or worldwide team in getting through a World Cup, so I'm totally comfortable with that, and what's beyond that is to be decided.

Southgate's team included the returning Luke Shaw and Joe Gomez, with both players impressing as Shaw set up Rashford's opener and Gomez looking composed throughout.

"I think what is happening at junior level is that there is more emphasis on technical ability, there is more, right from five, six, seven-year-olds, there is more emphasis on being able to handle the ball and play".

"We have got 19 matches, it's not very long, but, in my opinion, we have got the best group of players in the country here".

"At the time they were thinking about flying me back and, if I had flown back, then I would have probably lost my leg because of the blood clots and stuff in the leg".

Shaw was replaced by Danny Rose after the team of physios had carried him off the pitch.

Luke Shaw's first England start for three years was ended early by a nasty head injury after a collision with Spain's Dani Carvajal.

"It is not a concern", he said.

"We're seeing that with some of our junior teams". We want to test ourselves against the best and certainly tonight we put up a fight. At times his previous goals have come outside the box and we know he can hit the ball.

"This was a flawless night, the team picked up a huge victory and we saw a very impressive Spain side", said Saul.
