Kolkata bridge collapse kills one man and leaves dozens injured

Kolkata: A section of the Majherhat bridge in south Kolkata collapsed on Tuesday evening killing one and leaving around 25 people injured.

According to The Telegraph, an agency from Delhi that had been that had been commissioned to conduct a safety audit of the structure following the 2016 collapse had said a year ago that the Majerhat bridge had become too heavy: the surface had been relaid many times and disused tram lines still ran over it.

Circular Railway services were also affected after the bridge collapse, an Eastern Railway spokesperson said.

Four NDRF teams along with fire brigade personnel were pressed in the rescue operations. But there is no flight available now. "There was a report on a pit here for quite some time, I don't know whether the public works department noted it", he said. The Army field hospital detachment in Kolkata near the collapsed Majerhat bridge has been called in to help in rescue operations.

According to reports, traffic movement through Diamond Harbour Road in Taratala area had been suspended. "As of now there has been no casualty, but search operations are underway, let us wait", Hakim said.

The Majerhat bridge reportedly collapsed around 4:45pm. Train services on Budge BudgeSealdah line may be restored after ensuring the safety in train running, he said. My thoughts are with the families of the victims.

The West Bengal state governor, Keshari Nath Tripathi, said the bridge "deserved better maintenance".

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the incident is "deeply unfortunate" and wished the injured a speedy recovery. It runs over the Majerhat Railway Station and connects the city centre to Behala and other southern suburbs.

Some local people alleged the collapse might have been due to the construction of metro railway pillars nearby but this was not immediately confirmed by the experts.

The All India Trinamool Congress, West Bengal state's ruling party, said on Twitter the bridge was 40 years old.
