"In January 2017, I made a bad mistake for which I paid dearly, I am ashamed", Papadopoulos told the court in Washington.

Michael Flynn, a former national security adviser to Trump who was also a close campaign aide, pleaded guilty in December to lying to FBI agents about his contacts with Russian Federation and agreed to cooperate with Mueller's investigation.

"I made a awful mistake but I am a good man". Russian Federation has denied US allegations that it interfered in the campaign and President Trump denies campaign collusion.

Papadopoulos pleaded guilty in October to making false statements to the investigation.

He said Trump had impeded the inquiry by calling it a "witch hunt" and "fake news".

According to Bloomberg, the DNC said it believed all of the defendants in the case had been served, with the exception of Mifsud.

Papadopoulos lied to investigators because he was "caught off-guard by an impromptu investigation" and wanted to "save his professional aspirations", his lawyers said.

"While its true that George made some political rookie mistakes on the campaign and afterwards it's important to remember that he's the victim here", Gordon said.

They said Papadopoulos' initial lies hindered investigators' ability to effectively question, challenge or detain Joseph Mifsud, the London professor who had contacted him.

The lawyers portrayed Papadopoulos as "out of his depth" as a foreign policy adviser for a candidate for whom he had "unbridled loyalty". He was the first known Trump campaign official to cooperate with the special counsel into possible conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin.

The $28 million price tag cited by Mr. Trump is likely a reference to the cost of the Mueller probe. "A great day for America!" tweeted the President.

He later attempted to use his links to the professor and Russian nationals to attempt to set up a meeting between Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Papadopoulos has said that it was his loyalty to Trump, his career ambitions and his efforts to distance the campaign from any Russian associations that led him to lie to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. "While his offense was grave, Mr. Papadopoulos did not intend to derail the federal investigation".

Papadopoulos tried futilely for months to arrange a meeting between top campaign aides and Russian officials.

Prosecutors asked for a sentence of as long as six months in jail, telling Moss that Papadopoulos failed to provide "substantial assistance" to investigators and disclosed what he did only after he was confronted with his own records. "Of course I'm remorseful, I'm contrite and I did lie [to the FBI] but you know you're just taken off guard, I guess, in such a momentous occasion where you're potentially sitting there incriminating the president".
