A Brazilian football journalist has however disputed this version of events after claiming that the midfielder was left out of the Arsenal match day squad due to a heated argument with manager Unai Emery earlier in the week.

Rumours grew that the German World Cup victor had had a disagreement with Emery after he learnt he was to be left out of the starting line-up at the Emirates, but Emery said he still had a good relationship with the 29-year-old, who he said had withdrawn because of illness.

Mesut Ozil fell ill shortly after having a tactical chat with manager Unai Emery in which the Arsenal manager reportedly told the German he would be playing a new role against West Ham. That "balance" Emery has talked about following all of his Premier League games in charge of Arsenal so far may take a long time to arrive. "He feels better today and before the match he was with me", Emery said.

Ozil missed the Gunners' 3-1 Premier League win over West Ham yesterday through illness - but not everybody is convinced.

"No problem with the player". I said come if you feel better and he felt better.

"He left training because he was going home".

Danny Welbeck came off the bench to wrap up the points in stoppage-time.

"The first half, we needed calm". Getting three points on the board after losing to Manchester City and Chelsea to open up the season will be a big relief for Emery. We have to see the reasons why we conceded so many. The ball fell to substitute Alexandre Lacazette whose attempted cross ricocheted off West Ham defender Issa Diop's chest and in for an own-goal. "Arsenal didn't create too many chances during the game, we created double the chances as them".

'I spoke with him about things tactically for this match and the last match.
