Ohio State Suspends Urban Meyer Three Games

"Vengeance against her ex-husband regrettably resulted in collateral damage to Urban Meyer, Gene Smith & The Ohio State University".

In a statement, the university said the punishments were handed down after an independent review of the matter found Meyer and Smith "did not exhibit the kind of leadership and high standards that we expect".

Meyer fired Zach Smith, an assistant coach, on July 23 after learning of reports that Smith's ex-wife Courtney Smith had been given a domestic violence civil protection order against him a few days before.

The meeting on Wednesday was a forum for the board's input, but university president Michael V. Drake will make the final decision.

Smith, who was sacked by Urban Meyer in July for "cumulative" reasons, reportedly spent hundreds of dollars on a strip club visit while on a recruiting trip in Florida in 2014, the investigation found.

Simply failing to show up on scheduled recruiting visits and then lying about it could have been more than enough to fire him. His ex-wife accused him of yearslong abuse and sent photos to McMurphy of bruises he allegedly inflicted. Others drove by and filmed the throng of media that had been waiting outside for most of the day. "I fell short in pursuing full information because at each juncture, I gave Zach Smith the benefit of the doubt", Meyer said to a room full of reporters at the Longaberger Alumni House in Columbus.

Ohio State handed football coach Urban Meyer a three-game suspension for his actions in the Zach Smith scandal.

Summing up the situation in a July 24 text message to Stan White, a retired National Football League linebacker who starred at Ohio State, Meyer wrote, "He said she said".

The investigators' report says Meyer then had a conversation with Brian Voltolini, his director of football operations about, "how to adjust the settings on Meyer's phone so that text messages older than one year would be deleted".

Meyer will be away from the Ohio State sideline for games against Oregon State, Rutgers, and TCU. But he also acknowledged lying to reporters a week earlier when he said he hadn't heard of the incident until shortly before he fired Zach Smith. "And I did so regarding the Zach Smith incident in 2015", the coach continued.

Gene Smith, a member of the College Football Playoff selection committee, said the "greatest pain" he feels is for the people he serves every day. Meyer will be able to return for the Buckeyes' September 22 matchup with Tulane.

Gene Smith said Wednesday night, "I fully support the findings of the report, and the subsequent actions that the university has taken".

"Ultimately, I'm responsible for everyone's behavior in the football department", Mr. Meyer said.

There was a May 2014 incident where Smith ran up a $600 bill at a strip club with another OSU assistant coach. I want to apologize to Buckeye Nation. But there was no intent to mislead. He also insisted to investigators he met with Courtney Smith after Zach Smith's 2009 arrest and that she recanted her original story to authorities. Co-offensive coordinator Ryan Day is the interim coach.

Now Coach Meyer is facing public scrutiny after the report exposed allegations that he erased text messages from his phone prior to handing it over to investigators.

Ohio State announced the decision Wednesday night after an investigation into his handling of accusations of domestic violence made against Zach Smith, a longtime assistant coach.
