Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has fired the Director General of the Department of State Security, Lawal Daura.

The presidency denied authorising the move, which comes amid a surge of tension between President Muhammadu Buhari and political rivals.

"Mr. Seiyefa, who hails from Bayelsa State, was before his new appointment the most senior director in the DSS - Assistant DG".

Images of the incident were shared widely on social media.

It is not immediately clear whether and where he is being held.

The acting President, who is a professor of Law and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, attracted the commendations of his colleagues, who said he had saved the nation's democracy and upheld the supremacy of the rule of law.

Atiku, who is a PDP presidential hopeful, urged Buhari to call the police and DSS to order "and abandon this madness".

The statement gave no reason for Daura's dismissal.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo has met with the newly appointed acting director-general of the Department of State Services (DSS), Matthew Seiyefa at the Presidential Villa, Abuja. Parliament went on recess last week until September 25 but meetings were to be held on Tuesday.

The ruling party said attempts to blame its leaders for Tuesday's blockade were "false allegations" and "mischievous".

He said "Obviously, like I said, I have not got a detailed brief on that".
