Madonna attends Ariana Grande show amid Aretha Franklin 'tribute' backlash

Those who watched the event know that Madonna was there to present the award for Video of the Year, but before she honored Camila Cabello with it, Madonna made a decision to share a story with the audience.

She took the Radio City Music Hall stage during the second half of the Monday show for what appeared to be the night's big tribute to Franklin, but her speech appeared to be more about Madonna than the soul singer, who died late last week.

When MTV announced they'd be doing an Aretha Franklin tribute at the VMAs, we collectively gave the network a side eye.

Others questioned why Madonna was chosen to deliver Franklin's tribute over artists who were more closely associated with her.

Viewers were less than impressed however, as one said: "Who keeps letting Madonna do tributes?". Madonna said in an Instagram posting on Tuesday. Madonna presented the award for Video of the Year to Camila Cabello for "Havana", beating out Childish Gambino, Ariana Grande, Drake and Bruno Mars for the trophy. She spoke at length about her own start in the business and her own career before thanking Franklin for "empowering all of us".

Her death last week brought tributes ranging from former President Barack Obama and Elton John to Carole King, Barbara Streisand and Lionel Richie. Yet, somehow Madonna's tribute to Franklin at Monday night's MTV VMAs was so tone deaf we can nearly hear Franklin rolling her eyes from the great beyond.

The beloved Queen Of Soul died aged 76 following a battle with pancreatic cancer on Thursday 16 August, surrounded by friends and family. I am still mad at her for the Prince one. "Well. Hello, sir. I would now like to present the nominees for the Video of the Year". You honor a legend by telling their story or SHUT UP.
