'Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3' put on hold following Gunn's exit

"A small group which was getting started with the pre-production work has been told that they are free to look for new work", hollywoodreporter.com quoted several sources as saying. But Gunn got fired by Disney studio when his controversial tweets on paedophilia and rape resurfaced.

Bautista, along with his fellow Guardians cast members, wrote an open letter to Disney in hopes of having Gunn reinstated as the director for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, and for a bit, there seemed to be hope of that happening. That's a problem, and Disney and Marvel have reportedly made a decision to halt the preproduction work that started on the film while it continues its search for a replacement for series director and writer James Gunn.

The third installment of the popular franchise was set to begin prepping for pre-proudciton, with principle photography set to start later this winter.

"The timeline has been pushed out", added another source.

Former Scooby Doo writer Gunn - who has worked on other Marvel films, including Avengers: Infinity War - had already finished a script for a third film, which was due to enter full production in early 2019. However, after the filmmaker's problematic old tweets resurfaced online, he was sacked from the project by Disney. Gunn apologized for the comments and said they were jokes made when he was in a different stage of life. Recurring members of the cast, including Dave Bautista, who plays the alien warrior Drax, expressed their dismay at Disney's decision. The names of the directors who could potentially replace Gunn include Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi, the report added.

A release date for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has not been announced.
