Gold Box Office collections: Akshay Kumar starrer picks up pace during weekend

Kumar is now still reveling in the success of his sports drama, Gold, which is inching towards the 100 crore club at the box office.

Although collections of Satyameva Jayate were lower than Gold, footfalls for the former were lower by just about 5 per cent as compared to Kagti's film. "Gold" is a historical sports drama. "Yes, the box office is on fire".

On Monday, Akshay shared an image of himself holding the memento on his Instagram and captioned it, "Here's another gold from the good people at Instagram". While Gold was shown across 3,300-3,500 screens, Satyameva Jayate was released across 2,300-2,400 screens.

Gold now stands at 75.30 crore* and the pace at which it is going, the 100 crore mark would be reached in the second weekend. According to Boxofficeindia it is the highest opening day ever for an Akshay Kumar film as it beat the Rs 16.98 crore worth collection of Singh Is Bling, which was released on Gandhi Jayanti (October 2) in 2015.

Milap Zaveri's commercial action-drama Satyameva Jayate also earned Rs 28.47 crore over the weekend after recording a Wednesday (15 August) opening of Rs 20.52 crore.

"The film has practically doubled its Thursday number on Sunday and has done well to get this far considering the huge 70% fall on Thursday", the Box Office India report added.

Trade analysts say prospects for both films are positive given the long extended weekend ahead, with Independence Day to be followed by the Parsi New Year on Friday.
