Deadly mass shooting at video game tournament in Florida

The deadly shooting during a Madden 19 National Football League tournament in Jacksonville, Florida, Sunday has prompted calls for tighter security at professional video gaming events.

A suspect involved in the shooting is dead. Pending confirmation, we believe the suspect is a 24-year-old, David Katz from Baltimore, MD.

He said the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot and that authorities were still making final confirmation of his identity with the Federal Bureau of Investigation assisting them in Baltimore.

While police have not identified the victims, family members told Jacksonville CBS television station WJAX that the two people killed were Eli Clayton and Taylor Robertson, both were video game contestants.

Katz was in Jacksonville for the Madden NFL 19 video game tournament.

Authorities added that the suspect's vehicle has been impounded and that "he somewhere locally last night". He did not provide details about the number of killed and wounded. The games maker, EA Sports, lists a David Katz as a 2017 championship victor.

Williams said law enforcement received 911 calls shortly after 1:30 p.m., local time, about shots fired at the location, and that authorities responded within minutes. A Madden competitor, Stephen "Steveyj" Javaruski, told LA Times that Katz was a player who lost in the tournament and then opened fire on the other competitors.

Sheriff Williams confirmed they had had a copy the video and urged anyone else with footage of the incident to contact them. "Many blocks away", the sheriff's office tweeted. Some victims transported themselves, Williams said. Six others were transported to the hospital in serious or good condition, three shot once and three shot a couple of times. One person is being treated for a minor injury at Baptist Medical Center, spokesperson Cindy Hamilton said.

"The massacre in Jacksonville is a tragic reminder of the threats we face from gun violence, no matter who we are or where our day takes us", said Giffords, who co-founded a gun violence prevention organization. The two remaining victims include one in serious condition; that victim has multiple gunshot wounds to the chest, according to CNN. The official eSports event was part of the Madden Championship Series, which offers large monetary rewards to winners. "Life can be cut short in a second", he said.
