Trump - who during his presidential campaign charged that some Mexican immigrants were "criminals" and "rapists" - early in his presidency ordered the building of a wall along the 3 200km US-Mexico border.

"We talked about border security, we talked about trade, we talked about NAFTA, we talked about a separate deal, just Mexico and the United States", he explained. He aptly cashed in on the Mexican public's anger towards Trump, who throughout the Mexican election campaign season continued to criticise Mexico's immigration policies, insist that Mexico should pay for the border wall, and fuel anti-Mexican and anti-immigrant rhetoric in the US.

"We're going to accompany the current government in this negotiation, we're going to be very respectful, and we're going to support the signing of the agreement", he told Milenio TV.

"This new national project will seek to establish an authentic democracy and we do not intend to establish a dictatorship", Lopez Obrador said. At the same time, he also hopes to persuade Trump to help develop Mexico and Central America in order to contain illegal migration.

"We won't do the dirty work of any foreign government", AMLO said, referring to detentions of Central American migrants trying to reach the USA border.

Lopez Obrador praised the Mexican team that has been leading talks under Pena Nieto to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement.

He said Mexico's "very strong" immigration laws could be used to help keep illegal immigrants away from the USA border.

The results make Obrador Mexico's first presidential candidate to receive more than 50 per cent of the vote since the PRI lost its dominant position in the last century.

Carlos Urzua, Lopez Obrador's pick to be his finance minister when he takes office on December 1, told Reuters on Monday that the new government will aim to reform the pension system and to reduce costs at Pemex during its six-year term.
