Jose Mourinho: 'Nemanja Matic will miss start of Premier League season'

He has cut an unhappy figure throughout United's two-week trip to the US, finding fault with an array of issues since arriving in California earlier this month.

Mourinho has spent much of the past two weeks in a strop, but yesterday evening, after watching his side suffer a heavy defeat against their rivals in front of 101,254 fans in Ann Arbor, Michigan, the United manager was even more downbeat than usual.

Mourinho is finding fault with everything but accepting responsibility for none of it, and it is beginning to wear thin.

"I have learned nothing from this game", said Mourinho.

But Liverpool's lead only lasted four minutes when one of United's brighter players of the game, Andreas Pereira, fired in from a free kick.

"The majority of the players that played are not going to play - some of them are not even going to belong to the squad".

Mourinho questioned Valencia's professionalism after the 4-1 thrashing.

"This is not our team, this is not our squad". We start the game with nearly half of the players [who] aren't going to belong to our squad. This is not our squad. "This is not my squad, half of my squad are missing and half of the players out there today will not be at the club after August 9".

"I have played at a lot of big clubs and I want to help this team to go forward and I hope we can start a good season".

Asked if he needs reinforcements, Mourinho replied: 'This is nothing to do with reinforcements. I don't think you are right to say he is not happy.

Alexis Sanchez scored for Manchester United against AC Milan.

"We are not playing here to improve the team or the dynamic, we are playing here to just survive and have some not very ugly results".

Sadio Mane hit the victor from the penalty spot as Liverpool beat Manchester City 2-1 last time out and the Senegal star was on target from 12 yards again to open the scoring afterMohamed Salah was fouled.

The Red Devils have made three new acquisitions so far this summer after having tied up deals for Diogo Dalot, Fred and Lee Grant.

"I would like to have two more players", he said. 'I think I am not going to have two. "I think that it's possible I will have one". And that one, I gave a list to my club of five names a few months ago.

"If it's possible, it's possible. If it is not possible, we keep fighting and working and believing in the players that we have". We played simple and quick, kept them moving.

A bit of sunshine, maybe.
