Resolute Morroco fall short in battle as Cristiano Ronaldo rescues Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo continued his fine goal scoring form at the FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation as he powered Portugal to a 1-0 win against Morocco on Wednesday, June 20.

Morocco, playing in its first World Cup in 20 years, linked play neatly through midfield but relied on set-pieces for its clearest chances - a growing theme at this year's tournament.

Ronaldo's fourth-minute goal moved him past the legendary Ferenc Puskas onto 85, and now only Iran's Ali Daei has scored more worldwide goals (109) than the Real Madrid forward.

Ronaldo started his world cup campaign by scoring a hat-trick against Spain and managed Portugal to claim a 3-3 draw.

Against Portugal, Morocco must earn at least one point before Spain plays Iran in Wednesday's late game in Kazan.

Amrabat was donning a skull cap for the match today, having picked up a head injury last time out, but took it off after 16 minutes.

Morocco continued to carve out opportunities as Patricio clung on well to a curling Belhanda shot, and the Portugal keeper pulled off an even better save minutes later. Ahead of him, only Iran's Ali Daei, whose seemingly unbreakable total of 109 looks that little bit more vulnerable now. A short pass to Joao Moutinho and he curled it in to the six-yard area as Ronaldo raced from behind to dive and hit a sublime header past the Moroccan keeper to send Portugal 1-0 ahead in the game.

"I'm not disappointed about the performance, I'm happy with it and very proud of my players", emotional Morocco coach Herve Renard told reporters.

Portugal have been poor and other than the first goal, have struggled to get Ronaldo into the game. You all should know that FIFA World Cup 2018 began already and people can watch the live streaming on time.

The match took place at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, Russia.

There was a bit of controversy in the build-up to the game surrounding Morocco's Nordin Amrabat, with the former Watford winger picking up a concussion in the loss to Iran.
