The transfer took many by surprise, with the 'Reds' agreeing a deal worth up to £43.7 million to secure the midfielder's services, just two days after their Champions League heartbreak.

The Lyon attacker had been closely linked with a move to the Anfield club this summer, though OL president Jean-Michel Aulas said on Friday that he still hoped the France worldwide may yet remain with the Ligue 1 outfit.

"He is a very good player, of worldwide level", the 24-year-old told French outlet RMC Sport.

Liverpool's Fabinho has been praised by Brazil captain Thiago Silva.

But agreement has now been reached with the Premier League club that will see Fabinho join the Reds after the finals in Russian Federation.

There is the risk for Liverpool that it could prompt other suitors to move in for him as well, hence why they are looking to complete a deal before the tournament kicks off June 14.

There was disappointment in Europe, however, as Fekir missed the CSKA Moscow defeat that ultimately cost them a place in the quarter-finals of the Europa League, the final of which was played at Parc OL.

"I like that he is young yet experienced also, with a high number of games at a club that compete to win".

The Brazil worldwide revealed to France Football: "I am very happy".

"We are hugely proud that a natural talent we developed is in the national squad and I will be at the match tonight (Monday night) when he will play for France", said Aulas.

Atletico Madrid and Chelsea have been keeping tabs on the French attacking midfielder, but Liverpool have been the ones who have made concrete moves for the player.

Fekir is now with the French national team and scored during their 2-0 victory over Ireland in their World Cup warm-up game on Monday.

The 24-year-old Fabinho, who has made four global appearances for Brazil, scored 31 goals for Monaco.
