Donald Trump calls critics of North Korea summit 'haters and losers'

U.S. President Donald Trump sits next to North Korea's leader Kim Jong Un before their bilateral meeting at the Capella Hotel on Sentosa island in Singapore June 12, 2018. Trump and Kim planned to meet one on one, joined only by translators, for up to two hours before admitting their respective advisers, a US official said.

When the USA president meets with leaders of countries with dimmer views of free speech, the American role is typically to push for more access.

President Trump said during the signing ceremony that they have "developed a special bond".

Trump and Kim arrived in Singapore on Sunday, both staying at luxurious and heavily guarded hotels less than half a mile apart, with Trump at the Shangri-La Hotel and Kim at the St. Regis Hotel.

He added that Singapore had been following developments on the Korean peninsula for a very long time.

Not to be outdone, Kim firmly pumped Trump's hand, looking him straight in the eye for the duration, before breaking off to face the media.

The country is also no stranger to hosting historic summits, having in 2015 been the site of a meeting between Chinese President Xi Jinping met Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou - the first time leaders from both sides met since Taiwan's separation from the mainland in 1949. That uncertainty appeared to carry over to the summit itself, where a "tight pool" was designated to witness Trump's and Kim's initial meeting.

"The entire world is watching the historic summit between (North Korea) and the United States of America", Kim told Lee through an interpreter when they met Sunday. -North Korea contact, the official said. Mr. Trump "gets along so well with ruthless, brutal dictators, but you have this acrimonious, hostile relationship with the Canadian Prime Minister?"

Trump was presented with a birthday cake by his Singaporean host. "And it's my honour and we will have a terrific relationship". Trump asked photographers: "Getting a good picture everybody?"

Rodman told reporters at Changi Airport that he had travelled to Singapore "to see what's going on" and that he hoped "that things turn out to be well for everyone in the world".

In the past few weeks, Trump has repeatedly said that he would simply walk out of the meeting with Chairman Kim, if he sensed that North Korea was not serious in denuclearization of the Korean peninsula.

The summit won't be Trump's first foray into treating an established despot and human rights abuser like or perhaps better than the leader of an allied nation, though it is Twitter's first time treating such an event like a Game of Thrones season finale. Libya's Moammar Gadhafi gave up his nuclear weapons program, only to fall from power.
