Brazil outclasses Serbia, sets up Mexico clash

Brazil beat Serbia 2-0 on Wednesday at the 2018 FIFA World Cup thanks to goals from Paulinho and Thiago Silva.

Serbia must beat Brazil to qualify for the last 16; if they draw it would leave them relying on Costa Rica to comfortably beat Switzerland. Serbia was eliminated, finishing third in the group behind Switzerland. Serbia, who play Brazil at the same time, have three points.

The Serbs almost scored in the 61st when Brazil goalkeeper Alisson pushed the ball into the path of forward Aleksandar Mitrovic, whose shot bounced off the keeper and was bound for goal before being cleared by Silva. Coutinho once again came through for Brazil as he put the victor home in the 91st minute while Neymar sealed the match off with one of his own in the 97th.

Brazil took a while to find their stride against a physical Serbian side who still had hopes of progress and briefly rattled the favourites, but once Paulinho put them ahead after 36 minutes they always looked comfortable and Silva's 68th-minute header settled it.

The game was barely 10 minutes old when Brazil were forced into a switch at left back, as Marcelo was forced off with what looked like a muscle strain, to be replaced by the capable Filipe Luis.

Brazil did what it had to do to win, making sure it wasn't the second big team to exit the tournament after 2014 champion Germany was knocked out by South Korea.

But now they are up and running, manager Tite will be confident of beating Serbia and topping the group.

Mitrovic then headed straight at Alisson when he found himself free in the box, as Serbia failed to land the telling blow with Brazil rocking.

Serbia enjoyed their best chance of the match four minutes later - Alisson touching a risky cross from the right straight toward Aleksandar Mitrovic whose diving header was saved off the line by a defender before deflecting back into the goalkeeper's hands.
