The Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL won’t settle the notch war

Google's upcoming Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL flagship devices definitely won't be the best-selling Android phones of the year. Google is now working on the Pixel 3 devices internally, post which the mass production of the smartphones will commence.

Google has discussed building the phones with iPhone manufacturer Foxconn, Bloomberg reports. Oddly, it will also continue to utilize a single rear camera lens, while all of the competition has long since moved to multiple lenses.

Google launched its previous Pixel phones around October so the Pixel 3 could be due for a similar release date in 2018.

For anybody hoping, therefore, that Google would use the Pixel 3 to settle the argument on display notches, there's going to be disappointment. In January, Google acquired parts of HTC Corp., and the engineering talent it got in the deal is heavily involved in the hardware and software development of the new devices, one of the people said. The smaller Pixel 3 smartphone will sport an older design with wide bezels above and below the screen, while the larger Pixel 3 XL will have narrower bezels up top that copy the iPhone X's notch. However, whatever Google plans on doing with that design decision, whether it's just another front-facing camera or one created to facilitate face unlock features, remains unknown.

Millions of gadget fans around the world are waiting anxiously for Google to take the wraps off of its next-generation Pixel phones.

As for the Pixel's smaller counterpart, which will likely go by the name Pixel 3, it's reported to have neither a notch or an edge-to-edge design. The larger model which was referred to as Google GB1 is said to have a "new display hardware", new cameras, and sensors. Overall, despite generally strong reviews, sales of the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL have not been good. The Pixel 2 is produced for Google by HTC, while the Pixel 2 XL is produced by LG. Images of the official-looking accessories were posted to Weibo, via SlashLeaks, and show that Google will be the next Android OEM to adopt an iPhone X-style notch.
