The nominations for the 2018 Tony Awards were announced this morning, and among this year's most nominated productions are the musical adaptation of beloved film Mean Girls, the revival of the Tony Kushner's gay HIV fantasia Angels in America and the gender-bending chorus of SpongeBob SquarePants.

GREEN "Cursed Child" was nominated in just about every category it was eligible for, as were "Angels", "SpongeBob", "My Fair Lady" and "The Band's Visit". "I'm from a small town where people don't really get out and dream big". Close behind were revivals of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Carousel, the Angels in America revival, and The Band's Visit.

Possible best musical nominees include "Mean Girls", "Frozen", "SpongeBob SquarePants", "Escape to Margaritaville" and "The Band's Visit".

GREEN I think we are approaching a moment when puppetry, magic and special animal effects will have to get a category.

London transplant Harry Potter And The Cursed Child, Parts One and Two was nominated for 10 awards as was a Broadway revival of My Fair Lady re-interpreted for a #MeToo, post-feminist NY audience.

J.K. Rowling's "Harry Potter" franchise extended its magical touch to Broadway, with the two-part stage play "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" featuring the bespectacled wizard earning 10 nominations, as did a revival of "My Fair Lady". He played Scorpius Malfoy in London and now on Broadway. The 2010 Tony victor for "Fences" faces off against Andrew Garfield in "Angels in America", Tom Hollander of "Travesties", Jamie Parker of "Harry Potter and the Cursed Child" and Mark Rylance in "Farinelli and The King".

Other notable mentions include revivals of Angels in America, Carousel, and The Band's Visit. SpongeBob SquarePants and Mean Girls are also slated to face off against Frozen and The Band's Visit for Best Book of a Musical.

The star-studded 72nd annual Tony Awards, the biggest night in Broadway, will be held on June 10 with singers Sara Bareilles and Josh Groban as co-hosts.
