Global demand for the new 2018 model has driven Ford Mustang to its third straight year as the best-selling sports coupe in the world, while its social media status as world's most hashtagged auto proves that passion for this motoring icon is stronger than ever with fans of all ages. And Ford is understandably pleased that it sold almost 126,000 of the cars in nearly 150 different countries in 2017. Ford pointed out that China is a strong market for the Mustang, with 7,125 registrations in the past year.

The Mustang will be the first ever two-door racer in the Supercars era and will be powered by a 5.0-litre Ford Racing V8.

"The world is falling in love with Mustang", Erich Merkle, a Ford sales analyst, said in a statement. Ford also noted that the Mustang is 10 percent more popular with women over the last five years, so it's gaining ground all over the place. "It could only be found on TV or the internet, and now it rolls down streets from Beijing to Sao Paulo".

In a landmark day for the future of motorsport in Australia, Ford has announced DJR Team Penske and Tickford Racing will race Ford Mustangs in the 2019 Supercars Championship.

'We're combining America's favourite sports vehicle with America's top stock auto racing series, ' said Ford Performance Motorsports global director Mark Rushbrook.

"I think this is good timing for us, especially as we look at how Fusion is still performing with four race wins so far this year early in the season, that we felt we didn't want to bring out a new auto until we knew we could do it right and make a good step forward", he said.

Both racing outfits are understood to have already undertaken exploratory mechanical and aerodynamic research on the Mustang, which will require significant body modifications to fit over the control Supercars platform. It has taken Team Penske to four owners championships carried Ricky Stenhouse Jr. "We can't wait to see it on the grid in 2019".

Mustang has competed in the NASCAR Xfinity series since 2011, and has won championships in all but one season. The homologation of the Mustang for Supercars, sees Ford Performance partner with DJR Team Penske and Tickford Racing. The public unveiling of the race vehicle will "follow soon, " Ford says.

The first series points race for Mustang will be the Daytona 500 on February 17, 2019.

Mustang is still going through initial testing and will be formally submitted to NASCAR for approval this summer.
