Truck falls into drain in Gujarat; 26 killed

A truck carrying members of a wedding party crashed in Gujarat's Bhavnagar district and fell into a drain on Tuesday morning.

IM Sayed, in-charge Superintendent of Bhavnagar police, said, "The primary investigation has revealed that the accident took place when the driver tried to overtake another vehicle on the bridge". As per eyewitnesses present near the spot, the driver of the truck lost control and the truck fell into a drain in Bhavnagar.

About 50 people were said to be travelling in the truck at the time of the accident. "The government is with the victims", said junior Home Minister Pradipsinh Jadeja in the State Assembly.

The truck fell on a concrete base under the bridge.

Vijay Rupani, Gujarat's chief minister, also expressed condolences.

The injured have been rushed to a local hospital and surely it is going to hurt you all for sure. Police say 20 others were injured and rushed to a hospital.

District Collector Harshad Patel informed about the deaths in the unfortunate accident. "May those who have been injured recover at the earliest", the PMO said in a tweet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief at the accident.

Authorities have announced financial aid of 400,000 rupees ($6,148) to the family of each of the deceased.
