Sharma made a quick start with three birdies in his first six holes.

England's Tyrrell Hatton and Spaniard Rafa Cabrera Bello both shot 67s to tie for third at 15-under 269.

Mickelson and Thomas were tied at 16 under after 72 holes of the WGC-Mexico Championship, but Mickelson tapped-in for par on the par-3 17th to claim his 43rd career PGA Tour victory.

Despite two European Tour victories already this season - in South Africa and Malaysia - it is fair to say a Sharma victory on Sunday would reverberate around the golf world.

"I can't put into words how much this means to me", Mickelson said. The youngest player at the tournament will be paired with one of the oldest, Phil Mickelson, in the final round on Sunday.

Phil Mickelson won the World Golf Championships-Mexico Championship in a playoff. "Then he made a few putts and he came back to me and said, 'Have a good day.' It was nice". World No. 1 and defending champion Dustin Johnson shot a 68 to share sixth place, three behind Sharma, who has literally taken the world by storm with a measured and composed performance this week. It's really hard and I'm not good with the speed today, even this week.

42-time PGA Tour victor Phil Mickelson dismissed Sharma as a member of the media when the 21-year-old Indian, who would stay up in the middle of the night to watch who are now legends to him, worked up the courage to introduce himself to the veteran American on the putting green. "That's what's exciting and that's what's so fun and that's what I've missed".

"It was always a matter of when, not if [he would win again]", said Mickelson's brother, Tim, who replaced Jim "Bones" MacKay on Lefty's bag previous year.

"I don't know what to say". I know he's a very talented player and I believe he's leading the Order of Merit on the European Tour, so I know what a great player Mr. Sharma is. "I found something in the practice rounds and I'm happy I'm rolling in some good putts". He spoke Spanish (at least I think it was Spanish), charmed patrons and finally (finally!) got back in winner's circle. To even have a chance to win this golf tournament after where I was through 18, through 36 holes, I'm very proud of myself.

Mickelson won his third World Golf Championships title and, just a month after being on the verge of falling out of the top 50 in the world for the first time in two decades, moves to No. 18 in the world.
