Egypt looked certain to defeat Portugal in a hotly contested match when, within two minutes of the match ending, Cristiano Ronaldo scored two thrilling goals.

It took the five-time Ballon d'Or winner's tally to 81 goals in 148 caps for A Seleção das Quinas, which stunned the African nation in a game billed as Ronaldo vs Mohamed Salah.

And my word, twitter erupted!

Salah scored with a thumping drive to put Egypt ahead early in the second half.

And Ronaldo sent his fans into delirium three minutes later after again finding the back of the net with a header.

There was more late drama when Ronaldo's second goal was initially chalked off for offside. They showed that they did not want to lose.

Along with his two goals, Ronaldo also got the crowd on their feet with a sublime piece of skill in the first half.

In this battle of Europe's most in-form forwards, it was Ronaldo who came out on top in a late 2-1 win for the European champions.

And Portugal's record scorer (81 goals) was not about to be overshadowed by Salah, capping his 900th career match by moving into third place on the all-time list of worldwide scorers.

Salah, who is leading the run for the Golden Boot in the English Premier League (EPL) stood up to the expectations and gave Egypt the lead in the 56 minute on Friday. The Real Madrid man now sits behind Ali Daei (109) of Iran and Ferenc Puskas (84) of Hungary.

Egypt coach Hector Cuper was disappointed with the result but happy with the performance.

Just one minute from time, Egypt keeper El-Shennawy pulled a fine save to deny Andre Gomes before getting his hands to a cross from Gelson Martins.
