Since signing new terms in September 2015, De Gea's salary has fallen significantly behind that of top earners Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez.

De Gea has previously been strongly linked with Real Madrid, but the Spanish stopper has seemingly become increasingly settled in the North-West of England over the past 12 months.

The Spaniard, 27, and his agent Jorge Mendes have yet to receive a firm upgrade on his current deal Old Trafford officials, according to reports. The Spain global has less than 16 months remaining on his current deal and is once again the subject of interest from hometown club Real Madrid.

De Gea is one of the big reasons why United have managed to hold onto second place this season.

Florentino Perez reportedly wants to replace Keylor Navas, but has been unable to purchase another keeper, while Zinedine Zidane has refused to buy a replacement in January.

With De Gea set to stay at Old Trafford, Real are expected to step up their efforts to sign Chelsea's Thibaut Courtois, 25.

This season as well, De Gea has been a rock at the back and has shown his pedigree to make world-class saves with both hands and feet, boasting a record of 15 shutouts in 29 Premier League appearances thus far.

Mourinho said recently of De Gea's situation: "The option, it's obvious that we're not going to let the option disappear".

"We are going to try".

"He barely has holidays".

Andros Townsend had given them hope with an 11th-minute strike from Christian Benteke's pass just outside the area that took a deflection into the net.
