It would now appear Alex McLeish has managed to better his counterpart Gareth Southgate with McTominay deciding to play for the country of his father's birth.

New Scotland manager Alex McLeish travelled to Manchester United's training base in Carrington last week and persuaded McTominay that his worldwide future lay in dark blue.

And Jonathan Norcroft of the Times reports McLeish has persuaded the Lancaster-born midfielder - who qualifies for Scotland through Glasgow-born dad - to switch his allegiance to the Tartan Army after England were also keen to make him their own and is expected to be selected for this month's friendlies with Costa Rica and Hungary.

"I do think it's an exciting time and we've got a lot of good young players who are eligible to play for Scotland".

Despite the fact he was born in Lancaster, Scott McTominay has rejected the chance to represent England at global level. "It's a bit of both - I want them both to do well".

McTominay has made 15 appearances for the Manchester United first team this season and is highly rated by boss Jose Mourinho. He's probably realised the weight of playing for England and working every summer, he doesn't want that.

"It would have been easy, financially, to go in the England side and if you're in the Manchester United team there's a good chance you'll get called up by England - that's been a route map for a long period, as you see with players like Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard". "I can't confirm because I have no information about that and my advice to him is not about national teams, is not about that".

"I think Scott deserves more than what he is getting".

"He'll know that, he'll adapt, and I think the biggest thing is not to put too much pressure on it. Let him find his way, ease his way into it and get that team ethos coming across".
