BJP Scripts History In Tripura

On Saturday, the BJP decimated the CPI-M in Tripura - one of the last remaining Left bastions, ousting the party from power after 25 long years.

"The poll outcome is also a boost for forthcoming assembly election in Karnataka", the chief minister told reporters in Mumbai, a day after the BJP won Tripura and is believed to be in reckoning to form governments with alliance partners in Nagaland and Meghalaya.

The elections in 59 seats of the 60-member Assembly were held on February 18.

He hoped that a new Government will be installed in the State at the earliest.

The J&K Government felicitated the Prime Minister, Narendra Modi for BJP's impressive performance in three north-eastern states. But NPF leader and chief minister T.R. Zeliang said soon afterwards that the BJP-NPF alliance, too, was still on.

This approach worked, with the BJP (that fielded 51 candidates) winning 35 seats on its own, and its tribal ally, Indigenous People's Front of Tripura (IPFT), winning eight of the nine seats it contested. A virtual political nonentity all these years in the tiny Left's northeastern citadel, where the BJP had drawn a blank in terms of seats and secured only 1.5 per cent of votes in the assembly polls five years back, the saffron outfit along with tribal party ally comfortably managed more than two-third majority.

The BJP government also sees the Northeast as India's bridge to Southeast Asia, and new infrastructure projects are planned to boost connectivity with ASEAN.

Karat will have tough time rebutting this line, as the results will give more lung power to his opponents, including the Bengal unit, that has been vociferously arguing for an alliance with the Congress.

Victory in the northeast will not dilute popular disenchantment with BJP rule in Rajasthan.

"The historic victory in Tripura is as much an ideological one". Today peace and non-violence has prevailed over fear.

According to party sources, BJP legislators would sit tonight to select their leader and tomorrow the formal claim for formation of the government would be placed to Governor. No words will be enough to thank them for the phenomenal support towards the BJP in Tripura.

Though with 21 seats, Congress emerged as the single largest party in Meghalaya and met the governor last night to convey that it should be invited first to form the government, and was in talks with UDP-HSPDP combine besides NCP and others for a possible arrangement, the UDP finally made a decision to side with the NPP following negotiations led by the BJP's NEDA convenor Himanta Biswa Sarma in state capital Shillong.
